The Sternum

Being a sequel to the Purrie, the Sternum is a luxury sports car with off-road capabilities. It is our next chapter because it takes aerodynamic optimization with subtle changes that take it from 0-100mkph in 6.2 seconds.
The large air vents on the door sides improve airflow to its two radiators (one on each side) for better cooling and improved down force to keep the car stable and quick. It has a redesigned suspension system with variable ride height – making it a perfect vehicle for different kinds of *terrain. With more attention to detailing on the inside, there’s a 6 inch smart entertainment and control system with android auto. More on the car specs in a bit.
Taking inspiration from the human sternum which is part of the rib cage that protects the lungs and heart, The Bennie Sternum name symbolizes our commitment to safety. More on the idea of the name at the end of this brochure where we feature an interview of Jerry Mallo..

Chasis

With sketches and blueprints drawn, we embarked on chassis fabrication using a
combination of steel tubes and other alloys. Employing arc welding, brazing and
fasteners to create this balanced framework of trusses for the Sternum.

Engine, Steering, Braking and Suspension System

After the framework was done with, mounting all the components was our next move. At this stage, we installed the engine and transmission system. The engine is a 4.2L naturally aspirated V8 engine with 40valves manufactured by Volkswagen-Audi but tuned by our team producing 340hp. The suspension system is a modified independent and double wishbone suspension in the front and rear all mounted on a truss with hydraulic pumps to enable a variable ride height function. Both suspensions work with a single damper & spring system

Miniature Model

To get a clear image of our design, we created a miniature model to help us learn how better to approach the clay model of the life-size of our vehicle. Using clay, we created this miniature to understand the intricacies of the design better. it also helped us appreciate the importance of clay modelling to fibre and carbon fibre design process especially in perfecting the tiny detailing of its exterior – taking into account aerodynamics, balance, aesthetics and uniqueness of the design.

Chasis Drive Test

After assembling the car, we went to our test ground in Jos to test the maneuverability of the car and its integrity. Paying attention to steering, braking, drifting, and handling at different ride heights and making adjustments and performing recalibrations and repairs after each test day to get the structure and systems right. We did these tests severally after each milestone in modifications and corrections till we got the right numbers and performance response from the car

Live Size
Clay Model

Having seen the design and what it looks like on the miniature version, we went on to create a live size clay model that will serve as a mould to cast fibre into. Using high quality treated clay, the live size was moulded and all the exterior features were carved

Fiberglass Forging/Casting

After the clay mould is properly carved to reflect the exterior details of the car, we went on to apply fiberglass, which is the process of laying the mat, mixing gel coat, applying polyester resin, and demoulding when it set.

When the fiberglass work was perfected, our team of body specialists did some more polishing to perfect the edges according to specifications, making the car ready for a paint job.

Painting

The car was spray-painted by hand by our team of painters and decorators, giving it a proper finishing. After the job painting, interior accessories and upholstery were installed.

It may interest you to know that the seats, roof lining, foot mats, and the leather finish in the sternum were made in-house by hand.

RBT (Roller Brake Testing

As part of getting the Sternum roadworthy, we proceeded to conducting a Roller

Brake testing to ascertain the integrity and efficiency of our braking system and to visualize the stability of components of the suspension system. This was done in our workshop’s chassis dynamometer.

Features

The Bennie Sternum has a couple of special features that make it a standout, such as its signature
gull-wing doors, an in-body Umbrella in the door, an AC power Inverter that can power a small home or camp van, a variable hydraulic-powered ride height
adjustment system that can raise the car up to 12 enabling off road mode.

Other Standard include an Android auto
infotainment system with built-in GPS,
and a rear view camera.
